It was an unaired pilot that didn’t air for 20 years, between the first two seasons of TNG, and that’s a fine place to watch it. Don’t start with The Cage, which most streaming services list first. As others have said, it’s not really necessary to be super strict about it, but I find it helpful. And to an extent I don’t think that’s a bad thing (for example, it worked in voyager because of the unique situation of the crew) but i’m discovery it’s just odd for a group of characters who are from the pre-Kirk era. With DISCO it’s all just out on the table. There’s none of the comport we see in other series, that line between duty and personal feelings. I also just don’t think the show is well written and that the characters are just a bit too emotional.

and characters literally stand around sometimes going “Oh I wish michael was here” or “gee whiz, michael could solve this problem.” they’ve only recently just started to flesh out the rest of the cast and it’s kind of ridiculous we are just now learning the names of people we’ve seen standing around on the bridge for years That might be fine if Burnham was a likable or sympathetic character but she isn’t.

The issue with Discovery is that it’s very much Star Trek: Michael Burnham. I don’t think this is the best way frame what doesn’t work about Discovery.

Regarding the movies: II, III, IV and VI with the Original Series Cast you should probably watch all of the TNG Movies (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, but you might skip Nemesis) and for me, I enjoy all of the JJ Abrams films to differing extents (the original characters, but in an alternate universe). You may decide you only want to watch select episodes, and if you were to ask 100 different fans for their top 10 episodes, you'd probably get a lot of different answers. Personally, I love TOS, ENT, and especially DS9, but I'm not as much of a fan of Voyager many people call Voyager a soft-TNG reboot, so you may very much enjoy it. Once you're done that, I think the world is your oyster. It will take you some time to understand the relationships between the characters and the world building, but if you enjoy it, you can go back and start watching S1 and S2 episodes (there's a notable increase in writing quality in S2, although it's fairly uneven). Each episode is, mostly, contained with consequences rarely carrying from one episode to the next. I would recommend starting with season 3. I think, if I were you, I might start with Star Trek The Next Generation. Wondering where you should start?
